Introduction

!is is tutorial to introduce you to absolute positioning and CSS in Freeway 4.1.1. Its goals are: 1) to
demonstrate how to use absolute positioning via construction of a simple page consisting of header, menu, and main content; 2) to introduce CSS lists, an essential to successful CSS positioning; and 3) to acquaint you with descendant selectors, another CSS cornerstone. !is tutorial assumes that you have some acquaintance with Freeway. Please read the Freeway and CSS Manual version 2 before you begin the tutorial. !e manual provides the necessary introduction to Freeway 4’s interface and operation.

I intend this tutorial as a stop-gap measure until So"press releases their own (and much better) tutorials; it
is in no way intended to replace or substitute for the company’s o#cial publications. Freeway Discussion
members have, however, voiced repeated requests for a tutorial of some sort. !is piece is meant as a temporary means to meet the demands of the Freeway community. As such, it is subject to all the weaknesses of a quick and dirty project. !ere may be typos, infelicitous phrasings, and—gasp—errors. I beg my readers kind indulgence. !is tutorial is not a CSS compendium; there are plenty of such references available online and in bookstores.

I have elected to begin with absolute positioning. Using absolute positioning is like building with blocks,
stacking boxes, or playing with Legos, albeit in three dimensions. Absolute positioning also seems to be
the most Freeway-like of the positioning options in that it allows the kind of design experimentation that
Freeway users have appreciated.

Setup:

1. Open a new Freeway document and use the values shown in the illustration.

2. Choose Document Setup from the Freeway Pro 4.1.1 menu. !e Document and Graphics options
can be le" at their defaults, and the Upload option can be $lled with individual requirements. We will,
however, be making some changes to the Output and Text options.

3. Click the Output button and choose the options shown in the illustration.
More readable code will add a bit to the weight of the page but not enough to be
concerned about. We do not want to reinforce tables with spacer gif, we do want to use an external stylesheet.

4. Click the Text button and choose the options shown in the illustration
unless you wish to use another language and encoding..........
